Several months ago a friend recommended Fresh Life’s app to me. I had a ten hour drive and wanted something to listen to, she told me that this would not only fill my time, but that the Velvet Steel series would change my life. She was right. (And I now have a new “Must Listen” set on my phone each week as I download Levi’s sermons. And yes, I feel like I’m on a first name basis with this Pastor – his sermons are so amazing that they will make you feel like he is speaking to you on a regular basis.)
Anywho… I was awaiting the release of Through the Eyes of a Lion, despite knowing that it centered around the grief of every parents worst nightmare – the unexpected death of his second daughter, Lenya. (So now you’ve been properly warned! It’s definitely not a happy, feel-good type book by any means!)
This book is heartbreaking. I cried for three straight chapters. (And it was an ugly, can’t breathe kind of cry.) My heart broke for this family.
But ultimately, I got so much out of this book. I feel like there will come a point in my life when tragedy strikes, but I will be a little more prepared than I was before I picked up this book. Sure, it’s going to hurt. (That’s just part of living this life.) But I feel like in some way, this tool will help me to stand my ground, turn to God and just hold on for the ride.
Writing this review is tough for me. I am not really sure what to say, I feel like this book is life changing and uplifting (despite such a tough subject) and one that everyone should read. But it’s such a hard one too. I give Levi Lusko so many huge thumbs up for writing this book, I can only imagine the strength that it took.
But let’s talk about it. What’s it really about? (Because I’ll be honest – I can’t read a full book about a child going to Heaven. I just can’t.)
This book is about facing your fears. Taking these moments that God gives us – even if they are the deepest pits – and using them for His Glory. It’s equipping you with scripture, tactics and prayers for when you have to face these terrible moments in life.
When it comes down to it? Through The Eyes of a Lion is a raw look at how to face grief. It’s gritty and feels like you’re reading a page straight out of Lusko’s personal journal. Pastor Levi Lusko is a person who truly loves God with all he has and is trying to make a difference in this world. I cannot recommend his book (or his Podcasts) enough! (I wonder if I can convince the Husband to vacation in Montana just so we can attend Fresh Life?)
